Management Lesson on “Situation Management”

Management Lesson on “Situation Management”

Decoding Krishns’s Action at Kurukshetra

Avijit Kumar Roy (Process Consultant)

What is Situation Management?

Question:
What do you think "situation management" means?

Answer:
It means changing your style or approach based on who you are dealing with and what the situation needs.

Think of it like this:
If you’re trying to convince your mom, your little brother, and your best friend to go to the same movie, would you say the exact same thing to each of them?
Probably not.
That's what Krishna did during the Mahabharata war. He changed his strategy depending on who he was talking to and what the moment needed.

Let’s Learn from what Krishna Did :

Let’s look at Krishna’s 4 different ways of handling 4 different people. I’ll explain it with today’s real-life examples so it’s super clear.

Case 1: Arjuna – The Emotional Teammate

Situation :
Krishna, in the war of Mahabharata is with Arjuna. Arjuna says, Krishna, I can't fight the war and I can't see people die. Krishna knows that if he does not win the war, it's all going to be terrible for the world. So Krishna says, hey Arjuna, you're coming to this world to perform your duties. Do not worry about the results. You're a Kshatriya. Just go do what you need to do and leave the results to me. Arjuna is inspired. He fights the war. He wins the war.

Point :
Arjuna didn’t want to fight in the war. He was emotionally confused. Krishna didn’t yell or push. He reminded Arjuna of his duty. He said, "Don’t worry about the results. Do what is right."

Management Style:
Spiritual and Motivational.

Modern Example:
Your classmate is stressed before exams. Instead of giving tips, you say:

“Do your best. Don’t worry about marks. You’ve prepared well.”

Lesson:
When someone is emotional or afraid, use inspiration and purpose, not pressure.

Case 2: Bhishma – The Wise Senior

Situation :
There was  a Great Personality called Bhishma Petamaha, the wisest of all wise men, fighting the war on the side of Kauravas, and everybody knows till he's there, they can never win the war. So Krishna decides to go into Bhishma's camp and say, Bhishma Petamaha, I want to ask you a question. Though, I, need no answers. What are you fighting the war for? Truth or evil? Bhishma Petamaha is totally confused. He doesn't know what to say. Krishna goes back. Next day, he confronts with Shikhandi. Arjuna shoots him down in the bed of arrows. Technically, Bhishma Petamaha is out.

Point :
Krishna knew Bhishma was wise but stuck on the wrong team. He didn’t argue. He asked a short, sharp question:

“Are you fighting for truth or evil?”

Then walked away. No fight. Just planting a seed of doubt.

Management Style:
Brevity (short & sharp speaking).

Modern Example:
Your senior in office supports a bad decision. You ask:

“Is this what’s best for the customer?”

You don’t argue. Let him think.

Lesson:
With wise or ego-driven people, say less, but make it deep.

Case 3: Bhima – The Confused Fighter

Situation :
Bhima was fighting the war with another war loard called Jarasandha. Jarasandha has a boon from God. He can't have an ordinary death. Bhima doesn't know. He's fighting with full strength for four hours length, and gone. He is unable to kill him. He looks at Krishna and asks, what do I do? Krishna picks up a stick, breaks that into two. As soon as he does that, this guy's excited. He divides his body into two. Body gets stuck. He says, what do I do? He asks again. Krishna responds silently,  he now thtows the broken sticks opposit to one another with respect to the previous positions (left one to the right side and vice-versa. This goes here. This goes here.) He follows exactly that with Jarasandha. End of Jarasandha.

Point :
Bhima was physically strong but didn’t know how to defeat Jarasandha. Krishna didn’t give a lecture. He just showed the trick by breaking a stick and switching positions.

Management Style:
Directive – Do this. Do it now.

Modern Example:
Your friend is struggling with a Rubik’s cube. Instead of explaining, you show the trick once.

Lesson:
When someone needs action, not ideas – give clear instructions.

Case 4: Duryodhana – The Clever Enemy

Situation :
Duryodhana, last Kaurava in the war standing. He had a hundred brothers. All of them die, but he is still alive. Mother Gandhari says, I can't see you die. So go, son, take a dip in the holy Ganga water. Come in front of me completely uncovered. (Without any clothes), I shall look at you. Removing this blindfold and whichever part of your body I look at will turn as strong as steel and no one can ever kill you. This guy goes, does exactly that. Krishna knows if this happens, we'll lose the war. So Krishna goes and stands behind a tree. Duryodhana comes out. He comes out, looks at Duryodhana and says, Duryodhana, where are you going? Mother has called you. Mother has called you like this, fully naked? You're not a kid anymore. Shame on you, are you going to go like this? But, I, don't have any problem. Duryodhana says, oh my God, this was wrong. And he goes and covers himself with a banana leaf. Mother (Gandhari) says, my son, did you come the way I asked you? He lies and as a reasult, all part of his body becomes as strong as steel except the covered part. Bhima hits him there, and kills him at his week point.

Point :
Duryodhana was almost unbeatable. Krishna couldn’t confront him directly. So he tricked him diplomatically—made him feel embarrassed and cover himself, exposing a weakness.

Management Style:
Diplomatic and Indirect.

Modern Example:
At work, your competitor wants full credit for a group project. Instead of fighting, you praise them publicly and subtly say:

“And thanks to the whole team who stayed late every night!”

Now everyone knows it wasn’t just one person.

Lesson:
When direct attack won’t work, use smart diplomacy.

Why One Strategy Doesn’t Fit All

Q: Can we solve every problem using the same approach?
A: No.

Trying to motivate Duryodhana with spirituality, or confuse Arjuna with short sentences will fail.

Each person is different. Each situation is different.

Just like:

·         You can’t wear the same clothes in summer and winter.

·         You can’t play cricket the same way on every pitch.

·         You can’t teach every student in the same way.

Final Lesson :

Situation management is like being a coach of a team where every player is different. To win, you must change your style based on who you are talking to and what they need at that time.

Test Your Understanding (Food for Thought):

  1. What would happen if Krishna used diplomacy with Arjuna?

Arjuna would be even more confused. He needed purpose, not tricks.

  1. Why didn’t Krishna give a speech to Bhishma?

Bhishma was too experienced. A short question worked better.

  1. When should you use the directive style?

When the person is stuck and needs a clear, quick action.

  1. What if you never change your strategy?

You’ll fail in different situations. One-size-fits-all doesn't work in real life.

Robot Suicide

#Suicide of a #Robot (real fact) A robot employed by the Gumi City Council in South Korea went defunct after falling down a flight of stairs. While some have sensationalised the event as ‘robot suicide', experts believe it is more likely a technical malfunction or glitch. The robot was a part of the city hall staff and had been working “diligently” since August 2023, said one of its coworkers. It helped with daily tasks such as document deliveries, providing information to residents and city promotion.  Before the fall, eyewitnesses reported unusual behaviour, with the robot circling in one spot seemingly confused “as if something was there.” The incident occurred on June 27 at approximately 4 pm, with the 'Robot supervisor' found damaged and lying in the stairwell between the first and second floors of the council building. The cause of the fall remains under investigation. Officials believe it may have been due to a navigational error, sensor failure or programming bug. ...
